Arts and Communication Theme

Rowlett’s beginning was as an arts and communication magnet school. In the United States, magnet schools are public schools with specialized courses or curricula. "Magnet" refers to how a school draws students from across the normal district boundaries defined for each school. Today’s research indicates that magnet students meet or exceed achievement gains in core subjects through the study of the magnet theme.

Rowlett made the transition from magnet school to public charter school in 2014, however, both the full choice concept and the arts and communication theme have remained.
Rowlett’s Theme

The theme at Rowlett focuses on performing arts, visual arts, and communication. Classes include Art, Dance, Drama, Music, Strings, Physical Education, Digital Media, Spanish Language Instruction, and Technology.  All students have opportunities to participate in performances and showcase their work through exhibitions. Technology supports the theme.

We celebrate our learning annually at an Arts Fest where students showcase their work, families can do art projects, and all can enjoy entertainment provided by students and staff.

We also host several entertainment showcase events such as our Hispanic Heritage Celebration, Veteran's Day Celebration, The Kindergarten Holiday Show, The Arts Holiday Show, The RFA Spring Musical, and more!

Physical Education classes are part of the regular curriculum and team sports are the focus. In addition, intermediate students can challenge themselves to win the Presidential Fitness award.

Rowlett in Action

Annual performances include the Hispanic Heritage Celebration, the Veteran’s Day Show, the Holiday Shows, the Black History Celebration, the Dance Showcase, the Theatre Arts show, and the New Era Film Festival..  Drama students and dancers and chorus members are featured in many of the shows. Additional performances are produced by grade level loops and directly correlate with the Rowlett Curriculum.

Rowlett works closely with Florida Studio Theater in Sarasota. Troupes perform annually at the school and students participate in the Write-a-Play contest each year.  In addition, a partnership with the Sarasota Film Festival allows student filmmakers to attend each year.

Rowlett is the only elementary school in Manatee County to feature The Strikers, a student drumline.  The school also features a band comprised of fourth and fifth graders. This group performs at school events as well as in the Tampa Bay area. The Rowlett Chix show choir is another specialized performance group!
